What Does EMP Mean?
What does EMP Mean? EMP stands for Electromagnetic Pulse. This can be caused by either a nuclear denotation (enemy attack) or an electromagnetic surge from a solar storm. This CME or coronal mass ejection is a huge superheated plasma eruption that shoots magnetically charged particles toward Earth. Both of these events could cause catastrophic damage.
Could either happen? Yes, not only could it happen – but it has happened. A solar storm called the Carrington Event happened in 1859 and took out telegraph wires and caused numerous fires. These events happen roughly every 150 years, which means we are well overdue for another one.
If a ‘Carrington Event’ happened today, it’s estimated that it would cause $2.6 trillion in damages…just in the U.S.
What Happens during an EMP Event?
This would be considered an act of war or terrorism, and it all depends on the location of the detonation. The following is a chart from Forbes Magazine that shows coverage from various burst altitudes. This could be quite serious and could easily put us back to the 1700’s.
An EMP strike would basically take out the power grid, and with it all electronics. Anything with an electronic control board would be ‘fried’…never to return. This would be an EMP attack from a foreign nation, but it could also come from terrorism. A terrorist group wouldn’t have access to the aircraft that an enemy nation would have, but they could do a lot of damage with localized EMP detonations.
This means that anywhere in the ‘strike zone’, your late-model cars/trucks, computers, appliances, cell phones, iPads, ATM Machines, internet, and more would most likely be taken out.
EMP Proof Your Home
What Will Work After an EMP Attack? Not much! Anything electronic would be history. If you had appliances, lamps, etc. that were not plugged in, they might still work. But, they wouldn’t be of much use if your electric panel box was unusable.
I’ve found a wonderful device that is hooked up to my electric panel box. It only took about 10 minutes to install it – but it protects against EMP strikes or CME’s. It’s called EMP Shield, and you can buy one for your house, your business, a generator, and also for your vehicles.
If the power grid is down, you could still operate some items in your home if you were protected by the EMP Shield by running a generator. This would depend on how much fuel you have on hand.
You could also have enough power for a few conveniences with solar panels. I would get them set up but not hooked up until an EMP event happened. The safest thing to do is keep your power inverter and charger in a faraday cage until needed. It would be a good idea to shield your batteries as well. This way, when there is an emergency, all you have to do is hook it up AFTER the event is over and be far ahead of the game.
What is a Faraday Cage?
Here are a few things to keep inside a Faraday Cage:
A Faraday Cage is a box covered with metal that the solar or EMP radiation cannot penetrate. A good DIY solution is to take a metal trash can with a tight-fitting lid and line it with cardboard. You can then place your important electronics inside to keep them safe. The cardboard is to prevent the items from touching the metal. So, be sure to line the bottom and sides with something to keep anything from touching the metal.

How to Have an EMP Proof Car
It’s so important to EMP-proof your car! If an EMP attack happens when you’re not at home, a car will be vital to your getting home to your family. Can you imagine if it happened and your car was unusable? Could you walk home? How far would it be, and how long would it take you? Could you carry needed items from your car? It would be some hard choices.
There would actually be a few vehicles that would still run after an EMP attack. However, they are the very old ones without electronic controls. Usually they are pre-1980’s models.
Get the EMP Shield for your car and save $50 today. Get that worry out of your life. This EMP shield is invaluable and should be installed on every car in your family. Don’t forget to store some extra gasoline for your vehicles, but keep it in a safe place! Sta-Bil is an additive that will extend the life of stored fuel.
Have a Family Plan
Have a family discussion about an EMP Strike or CME. If it should happen, your entire family should have a plan. If you install the EMP Shield on all your cars, it will be wonderful. But, what about all those other cars without one? They will be stalled all over the place and it could be hard to manuever around them. You might consider setting up some sort of practice driving in this event. And what about people trying to stop you or force themselves into your car? People will be in panic mode.
There will be a window of opportunity before most people understand the magnitude of what has happened. And, that is the time to get home and circle your wagons, so to speak. Take those few hours to position your family in the best possible way and take care of any last-minute details.
EMP Attack Survival
It’s estimated that within a year after an EMP Attack, 90% of the U.S. population would be dead. Startling thought, isn’t it? But, it’s actually accurate. Think about the people that are dependent on machines in hospitals, or people dependent on medicines that just won’t be available? Think about the disease that will occur due to poor sanitation and lack of water. Imagine no trash pickup and no running water!
Can you imagine the drug addicts without getting their fix? These people will do anything and everything to get drugs.
I’ve had family members steal prescription drugs from my parents…in times of plenty. Who know what they would do in times of distress when their drugs weren’t available?
You can expect gangs to form very quickly. People would most likely be killed trying to get out of the cities. There will be people that have starved or frozen to death. Water is vital to all living things – could you find a reliable source of water in case there was no water coming out of the tap? Could you find food to feed your family? Could you provide warmth during cold weather? Be sure you have enough food on hand to last for an extended period of time. At least until you can get a garden growing.
Gangs are ever-present in times of emergency and will be a very real threat to your family. Could you protect your children from abductions? Could you secure your home and protect against invasion? These are real questions and will require real answers…either now in preparation, or later when you have to deal with it being unprepared. Remember Hurricane Katrina – on steroids! With no help from anyone.
Medical Issues Resulting from an EMP Strike
Consider discussing your fears of an EMP with your doctor, and ask if he/she would prescribe additional meds that you can put away…just in case. Insurance usually won’t pay for more than a 30-90 supply, but it would be worth paying out of pocket for this assurance.
The sad truth is that many people would die if there is an EMP or CME that takes out a major portion of the country. It depends on their particular health issues and current medications, but too many people are dependent on these meds for survival.
What About a Pacemaker?
What about a pacemaker? This remains to be seen, but a pacemaker is an electrical device implanted into a human body. I would say the odds aren’t the best for these patients.
It would be a good idea to study herbs to see which ones might help you or your family member if they couldn’t get their regular prescription medications. Learn now how to use herbals and either plant them in your garden, or purchase supplements to put away in your stockpile.
What Does an EMP Do?
It basically destroys the life you’ve always known. We are all so accustomed to electronics and other tech items that it would be hard to do without them. However, in the event of an EMP or CME, you would have to go ‘manual’ on just about everything. Think about your grandparents and how they lived! Check out this DIY Sanctuary Guide written for people who won’t be able to leave their homes and ‘bug out’ in times of emergency. It will help you know what to do and how to do it.
If an EMP is a concern for you, I urge you to take steps right now to be able to survive if it were to happen. You’ll have to grow a garden for food to feed your family. Buy manual tools, especially garden tools. Order some heirloom seeds and keep them in a cool, dark place. Others have enjoyed our article on SHTF List of Supplies. This will give you a more complete list of things you will need.
Take an inventory of your kitchen tools. Do you have a (1) Manual can opener, (2) Potato Masher, (3) Old Fashioned Coffee Percolator, (4) Hand Mixer and (5) a way to wash clothes and hang them up to dry?
That battery operated drill is wonderful, but make sure you have old-fashioned screwdrivers as well. Don’t forget to have a good supply of batteries on hand. Also, make sure you have hand sewing supplies.
Consider where you live and what you have to work with. Do you have a source of water? This can make the difference in whether you live or die. You have to have water for drinking, cooking, bathing, cleaning, and watering crops or animals.
Do you have access to a lake, pond, stream or well? Swimming pool? If not, do you have a place to store a water tank? Remember that your tank(s) should be dark or painted black to prevent algae from growing. They can easily be stored in a garage, basement, storage building or barn.
Learn How to Barter
You won’t be able to ‘run to the store’ anymore for what you need, so you’ll have to have something new. It’s as old as time – and a survival skill that you should learn now! It’s called ‘Barter’. Learn how to Barter and you can find many things that you need. If you’re not familiar with the term, it’s basically ‘I have something that you need and I’ll trade it for something you have’.
Bartering can be either supplies or skill. It’s very wise to have or learn a barter-able skill. Medical skills will be greatly needed. Handymen will be in high demand. Do you know how to work on electricity, plumbing or carpentry? Cigarettes and liquor are good barter items, as well as junk silver coins. Again, make a plan for what you have or could learn.
Burglar-Proof Your Home
During a time of complete grid-down, you will most assuredly want to burglar proof your home! This means taking a critical look around to see your home through the eyes of a criminal. Where are the weak spots? Are your windows left unlocked? Could a burglar easily break a window and climb into your home? Security Window film is a good option to prevent break-ins. This is 8-mil clear plastic and very hard to break.
Don’t forget your exterior doors! Think about it. Exterior doors were placed there when the house was built, and hardly ever upgraded. Builders are in business to make money, so therefore, they use very basic supplies. Take a look at your door hinges, for example. Most have very short screws, and that’s all that is standing between your home and a burglar. So very easy to kick in! At the very least, replace those short ineffective screws with longer 3″ ones that will hold your door frame in place when a burglar comes calling.
We sell a great steel-security door system that is very easy to install. Just call us at 615-428-8500, and we can ship it to you. Our cost is way below what you find on the market, so call now for a great price on a great product. This door security system sells for $49.95. So inexpensive for the security it gives your family. Every exterior door should have one.
This no-tech way of security your home is so much better than a security system. By the time your security system alerts you, the burglar is already in your home. Isn’t it better to stop them before they enter your home.
